What makes a press-ready calendar file

01

How calendar binding works

Calendars can be Wire-O bound or saddle stitched, usually along the top so they hang and flip cleanly. Wire-O punches a coil through a row of holes and lies completely flat, ideal for calendars you write on. Saddle stitch folds the sheets and staples them along the spine, a simpler and economical option for lighter page counts. Pick the binding that suits your project in the calculator.

02

Pages and order

Build your calendar as single pages in reading order, starting with the cover, then each month. We impose the pages for you, so do not send spreads. Wire-O page counts step in multiples of 2, while saddle-stitched calendars step in multiples of 4, and we can add a blank page if needed.

03

Mind the binding edge

On a Wire-O calendar, a coil punches a row of holes along the bound (usually top) edge, so keep dates, text and key art at least 3/8 inch clear of it. On a saddle-stitched calendar, keep important content off the center fold instead. Photo backgrounds can bleed off all edges either way.

04

Bleed, trim and safe zone

Extend full-bleed art 1/8 inch past the trim, and keep grids and key text at least 1/4 inch inside the trim on the open edges.

05

Color and resolution

Calendars are image-heavy, so place photos at 300 dpi at final size, build in CMYK, embed or outline fonts and export one press-ready PDF.

Your questions, answered

Calendars come Wire-O bound or saddle stitched, usually along the top edge so they hang and flip cleanly. Wire-O uses a metal coil and lies completely flat, ideal for desk and wall calendars you write on. Saddle stitch folds and staples the sheets, a simpler and economical option for lighter page counts. Choose your binding in the calculator.

A standard 12-month wall calendar is a cover plus 12 monthly pages. Count every page, including the cover, so your file matches your order. Wire-O page counts step in multiples of 2 and saddle-stitched in multiples of 4.

On a Wire-O calendar, keep dates, text and key artwork at least 3/8 inch from the bound edge, since the coil punches a row of holes along it. On a saddle-stitched calendar, keep important content off the center fold instead.

Send single pages in reading order, starting with the cover. We handle imposition based on your page count.

If your calendar hangs, keep text and important art clear of where the hole punches. We can confirm placement if you are unsure.

Send your files, we will handle the prep.

Still have questions after reading the guide? Our prepress team checks every calendar file, including the binding-edge clearance, and emails a soft proof, usually within one business day.
