Paper

Printing on recycled paper has immense environmental benefits!

  • It takes 24 good-sized trees to produce a ton of virgin fiber paper. It takes 1.1 tons of waste paper to produce a ton of 100% recycled paper.
  • Paper that's 100% post-consumer waste (PCW) uses about 75% less water in production than its virgin-fiber counterpart.
  • Producing recycled Kraft pulp requires a third less energy than making virgin chemical pulp. (Kraft = process for creating strong paper)
  • Paper that's carted away to the landfill decomposes and ultimately emits methane gas, which traps up to 25 times more heat than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period.
  • Recycling brings an employment upside: Every 1000 tons of collected paper that's processed and re-manufactured creates 7 jobs!

You can be confident that the printing you order from Greenerprinter uses certified eco-friendly papers. Our house stocks contain the highest possible percentages of recycled content and sustainably harvested papers, processed without the use of chlorine or chlorine derivatives (bleaching without chlorine or chlorine compounds results in a much less polluting paper making process).

Paper Terminology

  • Basis Weight. Offset paper uses the weight of 500 25 x 38" sheets of text or 500 24 x 36" sheets of cover stock. Writing paper is measured on a different size sheet, so 20lb bond is the same as 50lb text stock. We use offset measurements and replace "lb" with "#". European measurements are metric and based on grams per square meter (GSM).
  • Caliper. The thickness of a sheet of paper is another important attribute. Caliper is measured in .001", so 20 point is .02".
  • Opacity. This measures the amount of see-through of a particular stock. High opacity reduces the visual distraction of printing on the back side of a sheet, particularly when there are large areas of color.
  • Brightness. The reflectance of a paper stock using standard (blue) lighting.
