What makes a press-ready hang tag file

01

Shape and dieline

A hang tag is cut to shape with a steel die, so your file needs a clean vector dieline (the cut path) on its own layer. We can use a standard rectangle, rounded or clipped corner, or a custom shape from your dieline.

02

Plan the string hole

Tags hang from a hole, grommet or ribbon. Decide where it sits and keep text, logos and key art clear of it, since the punch removes that area.

03

Bleed, cut and safe zone

Extend full-bleed art 1/8 inch past the cut line, keep important content 1/8 inch inside it, and remember that die-cutting can shift slightly, so do not crowd the edge.

04

One or two sides

Tags print on one or both sides. Supply both sides in a single PDF, front first, sized and oriented the same.

05

Color, resolution and finishing

Build in CMYK, place images at 300 dpi, embed or outline fonts. Soft-touch lamination, embossing and other finishes are available and may route your job to manual prepress.

Additional finishing options

Jobs with additional finishing options bypass our automated proofing system entirely and go straight to a manual prepress review. Your soft proof may take up to 1 business day to be prepared, and our team may contact you if any file revisions are needed.

Your questions, answered

If you use one of our standard tag shapes, we provide the dieline in the template. For a custom shape, supply your cut path as a vector on its own layer, or ask our prepress team to build one.

You choose. Mark the hole position in your file and keep text and logos clear of it. We can punch a hole or add a grommet depending on your order.

Add 1/8 inch of bleed past the cut line on any art that runs to the edge, and keep important content 1/8 inch inside the line.

Yes. Include the front and back as two pages in one PDF, sized and oriented the same way.

Yes. These finishes look great on tags. Jobs with added finishing go to a manual prepress review rather than instant proofing.

Send your files, we will handle the prep.

Still have questions after reading the guide? Our prepress team checks every tag file, including the dieline and hole placement, and emails a soft proof, usually within one business day.
