Flyer vs. Brochure: What’s the Difference?
Share

There are dozens of printed products that you can use for marketing your business, but with so many options, it can be tricky to know what the differences between each product are. How is a door hanger different from a rip hanger? Are pamphlets and brochures the same thing? Can books and booklets be used for marketing? What is a buckslip? We’re here to help clear up some of the confusion, starting with what the difference between a flyer and a brochure is.

What is a Flyer?

flyer is a promotional material distributed to inform potential customers about a brand. They’re also known as handbills, leaflets, or posters. Flyers are flat, rectangular sheets of paper printed on one or both sides. They are often sized to 8.5” x 11”, but many other sizes are available, both larger and smaller. Flyers are typically passed out to people to spread awareness. They often have bold, bright designs since people will only look at them for a few seconds. Flyers are a very cost-effective choice because they do not require any extra finishing.

What is a Brochure?

Just like flyers, a brochure is also a promotional material used to inform customers about a brand. Other names for brochures include pamphlets or handouts. Brochures are folded sheets that are printed with information and images about a brand. The most common brochure is a tri-fold, but there are many other options. If a tri-fold doesn’t sound like the right choice for your needs, consider using a Z-foldaccordion-foldhalf-foldroll-foldgate-fold, or one of our other folding choices. Brochures can include lots of text and images and are great for providing and explaining larger chunks of information. It is better to target people who you know might have an interest in your brand when passing out brochures, as these people are more likely to read all of the information you’ve included.

What is the Difference Between Flyers and Brochures?

At first glance, flyers and brochures seem very similar, but there are a few key differences:

  1. Purpose

Both brochures and flyers are used to inform an audience about a brand, but there are subtle differences in the way they do it. In general, flyers are more broad and include less information and more images than brochures. Flyers are meant to be briefly looked at and are great for introducing new people to a brand. For example, flyers would be effective when passed out to people walking by the outside of your business or enjoying a local event.

Brochures typically go more in-depth about a topic. They may include more text than flyers. They are meant to be looked at for a longer amount of time and are better for an audience that you already know is interested in a brand. For example, people interacting with your booth at a trade show, conference, or event.

  1. Finishing

Flyers do not require any additional finishing unless you choose to add features like foils or embossing. On the other hand, brochures need folding. You can always add other finishing in addition to the folding as well.

  1. Price

Because of the differences in finishing, flyers and brochures will have different pricing. Flyers will be less expensive than brochures because flyers do not require any type of folding. Brochures will be slightly more expensive but are still an amazing investment. The type of fold you choose could affect the price of the brochure.
