Direct mail, answered.

EDDM, postage classes, indicia, and mailpiece design. Still unsure about something? A print specialist is one message away.

· EDDM basics

EDDM stands for Every Door Direct Mail. EDDM postcards are an easy and affordable mailing service provided by USPS that allows your custom postcards to reach your target audience. You choose which locations and neighborhoods along a specified mailing route will receive your mailing pieces, which lets businesses effortlessly target local consumers.

No. EDDM does not use a mailing list since the postcards are delivered to everyone on a specified route. You save time and money by not having to source, clean, and organize a list, which can take hours or days and can be expensive to buy.

You select carrier routes on our route map, right in the EDDM order form. Each route shows its residential and business address counts along with census demographics like median age, household size, and median income, so you can choose the routes that best match your audience.

· Postage & classes

Unfortunately, with the USPS, nonprofits do not get to mail things for completely free. Instead, the USPS offers a significantly reduced mailing price for nonprofits. To use this option, nonprofits must meet specific requirements and first apply for authorization from the post office. Contact us and we will walk you through it.

Regular businesses send most of their direct mail as part of the USPS Marketing Mail class. It is one of the most budget-friendly options for large quantities of direct mail, but it is not the fastest. Nonprofits can send their mail through a similar version of this class for a reduced price.

First Class mail, with stamps or presorted, arrives within 1 to 3 business days. USPS Marketing Mail typically delivers in 2 to 10 business days. Nonprofit mailings can take 1 to 3 weeks. These windows are USPS estimates, not guarantees, so build a buffer into your campaign dates.

First Class Stamps deliver just like a letter mailed from your desk and are available for quantities under 500 pieces. Presort First Class gives you the same 1 to 3 day delivery at a discounted rate for larger mailings. Choose First Class when timing matters. Choose Marketing Mail when budget matters and your in-home date is flexible.

· Indicia & permits

Mail indicia is a printed marker added to each direct mail piece to signify that it has prepaid postage. These marks are printed directly on the mail pieces where a stamp would usually go, saving the time that would have been spent applying stamps manually. A permit is needed to use an indicia, and they are only used for larger mailings of at least 200 pieces.

You can get a permit imprint by setting up an advance deposit account with the USPS. You add money to the account, and when you mail with printed indicia, postage is withdrawn based on the weight and class of your mail. If you mail through Greenerprinter, you can use our permits and skip this setup entirely.

Yes. If you are mailing your job with us, download the appropriate First Class or Standard indicia from our mailing services page and place it on your artwork, or ask us to place it for you. If you qualify for a nonprofit rate, contact support@greenerprinter.com for our nonprofit indicia.

· Formats & design

Direct mail postcards have proven to be one of the types with the highest returns. Since there are no envelopes, your message is immediately visible when the recipient pulls the card from their mailbox, and postcards are extremely affordable to produce with one of the most budget-friendly postage prices. Catalogs put a huge variety of products in front of customers and give them a tangible item that builds a bond with your brand. Folded self mailers are made from one folded, sealed sheet, no envelope needed, and offer more space than a postcard.

USPS needs a clear area on the address side for the address block, barcode, and indicia. Keep the right portion of the piece, roughly 3.75 inches from the right edge, free of art and dark backgrounds. Our templates mark the clear zone and indicia position for you.

All of our house stocks are mail-friendly, recycled, and FSC certified. The address side stays uncoated so USPS barcodes and inkjet addressing print cleanly, which is why coatings apply to the front of the card only.
