What is a book?
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a book is “a set of written, printed, or blank sheets bound together between a front and back cover.” Books can be created in any size and with any page count. The interior contents of a book can include almost anything, including text, images, graphs, and illustrations. Books are meant to inform readers about a topic in detail. Books are often made to last with strong binding styles, like perfect binding or hardcover binding. They are often more expensive to produce.

What is a booklet?
Booklets are smaller versions of books. They have fewer pages and are often made with smaller dimensions as well. Booklets cover topics in less detail. They can include all of the same content types as books (text, images, graphs, illustrations, etc.) just in smaller quantities. Booklets are better suited for short-term use. They can be made with any binding style, but some common choices are saddle stitching and Wire-O binding. Booklets are inexpensive to produce, making booklet printing a smart choice for marketing.

What are the differences between a book and a booklet?
There are a few key characteristics that you can look at to determine if something is a book or booklet. A book or booklet doesn’t have to meet all of these rules to be considered one or the other, but these characteristics can lead you in the right direction when trying to figure it out.
Page Count
Books typically have larger page counts than booklets. Books can have hundreds of pages.
Booklets have smaller page counts, sometimes due to binding style. Booklets typically have between 8 and 50 pages.
Size
Both books and booklets can be produced at any size, but books are often larger than booklets. Common book sizes range up to 8.5 x 11 inches. Common booklet sizes include 5.5 x 8.5 inches and 6 x 9 inches.
Covers
Books are typically built to last. This means that their binding and covers are made from stronger materials than those of booklets. Book covers are made of noticeably thick paper or in the case of hardcover books, thicker paperboards covered in paper or fabric.
Booklet covers are often made from the same material as the interior pages. They can also be made from thicker paper, but booklets will not have hardcovers.
Purpose
Books provide a deep, detailed dive into whatever their topic is.
Booklets typically provide a brief overview of their topic, rather than the in-depth look provided by books. They are commonly used for marketing purposes, like in lookbooks, coupon booklets, and direct mail booklets.
Cost
Books are more expensive to produce than booklets. Books require more material and more labor, making their production cost more. Typically, books are also heavier than booklets, meaning that the shipping and transportation of books will cost more than that of booklets.
