Different binding methods will have different limits on the thickness of your magazine. Two common binding methods for magazines and zines are saddle-stitch binding and perfect binding.
Saddle-stitch binding uses small metal staples to hold sheets together. This binding style requires a minimum of 8 pages (including the cover) and can hold a maximum of 60 pages. Perfect binding uses glue to attach pages to a paper cover. In order for the glue to hold, perfect bound books must have at least 28 pages. Because this form of binding is very sturdy, large page counts can be accommodated. If you have a thicker magazine, this is the binding style for you.
What Are Common Magazine Sizes?
Magazines come in many different sizes, but some are more common than others. The industry standard magazine sizes are 8.5 x 11 inches and 5.5 x 8.5 inches. The smaller digest size (5.5 x 8.25) is another popular choice. If you’re looking for that classic magazine feel, these sizes will be your best options.
But let’s not discount your other options. If you’re looking for a more unique shape, try creating a square magazine. 8.5 x 8.5 inch and 5.5 x 5.5 inch magazines can create a memorable reading experience. Other sizes can also be created. Going bigger or smaller might be a good idea based on your budget and amount of content.
