What is saddle stitch binding?

Saddle stitch binding is a booklet binding method that uses staples to secure folded sheets together. Sheets are printed and folded in half to create four pages. These sheets are then nested into each other and laid on the saddle stitching machine. A metal wire is then pushed through the stack and formed into two staples that hold the finished book together. Saddle stitching gets its name from the saddle-shaped section of the machine where the sheets are placed before binding. Saddle-stitching is used for a wide range of books and booklets, including magazines and zines, coloring books, comic books, and more.

Does saddle stitching have page limits?

Unfortunately, saddle stitching has specific page count guidelines that you must follow. Saddle stitch booklets are made by attaching folded sheets together. Each sheet has four pages. Because of this, saddle-stitched booklets must have a page count that is a multiple of four. If your design doesn’t have this, don’t worry! You can simply add a few blank sheets to your design. This is typically done in the front or back of the booklet. Saddle-stitched booklets must have a minimum of eight pages, otherwise, the design is just a single folded sheet with no binding needed. We recommend that saddle-stitched booklets have no more than 60 pages. The stapled binding cannot hold large quantities of sheets, so for larger booklets, we suggest using a different binding method, like perfect binding, spiral binding, or wire coil binding.
